In islam terms the difference between ijtihad and qiyas. is that ijtihad is the process of Muslim jurists making a legal decision by independent interpretation of the Qur'an and the Sunna; such a jurist is a mujtahid while qiyas is the use of analogy as precedent in Shari'a jurisprudence.
